Web design here I come!

I have a small interior design business and need to get to more people and in mentioning this to a few friends and clients I am hearing about ‘the internet’ being the new and best way to reach people. Being an ‘arty’ person and running my business face to face and through referral with hardly any computer involvement whatsoever, this is a daunting subject for me!
First step is a website probably, now, I am a designer myself but web design or website design is something I have no clue about so where do I go? I dared to venture on to the internet and was bombarded with lots of terms that I found quite confusing! From what I found there I think I need to find a company that does web development and can help me put my design ideas in to a good website. If I want to get people to find my website what do I do? Do I advertise it in a newspaper or magazine? Apparently not! I need to find some SEO experts! What do they do I ask? Search Engine Optimisation is what that stands for but what it means is a complete mystery so I will need to ensure that the company I choose to help me with my web design are SEO experts! I am a little confused but am also looking forward to learning all about Internet marketing and maybe I will be better at it than I am at the old style marketing?!
