Google PageRank And Alexa Ranking Explained
Why are so many people talking about those numbers numbers? Those numbers are more or less strongly correlated to the popularity of a Web site. The goal is to make it easier for Web masters, site owners, and advertisers to compare sites and draw their conclusion about how those other sites are performing in real world figures (traffic, monetization, …)

Both measures have some shortcomings like PageRank being heavily dependent on Google’s moods and Alexa is giving you a picture based on Toolbar Users only. They are far from portraying some sort of truth.
As your site is evaluated by others based on those numbers to some extent, you should at least know what those are for your sites and how you are doing compared to your competitors.
