Website design or blog design

My business partner is creating a website and he has asked me to guide her through the process of web design. He is extremely good at graphic design but not so hot on the coding element. I agreed to advise him about creating the website using PHP and some flash video.
I came to the sudden realisation that my business partner wanted my help to create a website because he has visited my blog and liked the way that I had structured the menu and internal linking structure. I think that he is confusing blogs with websites. I may know how to set up a blog but this does not qualify me to advise someone on creating a good website design. I now realise that lots of people do not understand the difference between a blog and a website, wordpress and blogger make creating a blog very easy but it is more difficult to develop a website especially an e commerce website.
A blog is a sort of online journal. Anyone who creates the blog posts short articles, pictures and various entries to give the blog some depth can do this using a template. There is little work in creating a blog. Blogs are free and very user friendly and I am quite confident with the format.
There is significantly more work involved in creating a website with a good web design. After all, there are professionals who work full time in the field of web design. To create a website that works with a database you need a web developer with good technical support.
